FAQs

I’ve never recorded in a studio before - or I’ve had bad experiences in commercial studios - so I’m reluctant to try recording in a studio environment.

Me too. As a musician, I’ve had several challenging musical experiences recording with pro engineers in commercial studios. Recording can be a vulnerable process and sometimes commercial environments and/or insensitive engineers make the process harder. I built this studio to be a creative space where it’s easy to feel inspired, experiment, and work efficiently without being rushed. I try to foster an environment that makes your work easier. I will follow your lead on what helps to make that happen.

Why don’t you have separate rooms in your studio?

My prior studio (where I worked for a decade) was split into a main room, control room, and an iso booth. Because I most often work with artists in the role of producer/engineer, I found that sessions tend to flow the best when we are together in the same room rather than in separate rooms talking through headphones and microphones. Working together in the same room creates a sense of focus, support, and collaboration in the recording process that is not quite the same in a multiple room, isolation based set-up.

Are you available to mix a home recording that I’m doing? Can you help me dial in a home recording set-up or teach me about recording?

Yes. I love collaborative projects that aim to get you functional with some level of home recording. Often we’ll supplement projects done in this way with some elements (such as drums or vocals) being recorded here at the studio, but not always. I can also consult with you about your home recording set-up to make suggestions for next steps in gear, workflow, acoustics if that is useful to you.

What else do you do musically?

In addition to production, recording, and co-writing with various artists in the studio environment, I have played professionally as a performing drummer and percussionist for the past twenty years. I currently perform with the band Night Teacher on electronics, synth, and drums, in a guitar/percussion duo with guitarist Humberto Sales, and in an organ/drum duo called West of Wyatt. I release solo and collaborative recorded music through the Tree & Booms Bandcamp page, here. Additional works specifically tailored to sync can be found at Matt Wyatt Music.
